When starting a business or organization one of the smallest, yet most important, details is what you will be called. Your name is what helps you to be remembered. The right name should be memorable, catchy, possibly descriptive of your product or service, but above all it should be original.
These days it is easy to check the originality of your name with a quick Google search. When I chose to name our Sin Bin The Crow’s Nest I did my due diligence on Google and found no other businesses or organizations using that name in the St. Louis area. After finding that the domain crowsneststl.com was available, I bought it and our name was final. If it was found that crowsneststl.com was already taken then perhaps it would not be the best name for a St. Louis business.
Naming your business isn’t over after you’ve secured your domain, though. Name recognition is the most important part of a business. No one will buy your product or service if they don’t know who you are. So starts phase two.
In today’s world a presence on social networks is even more important than owning your own domain. Even if you use your own site for most of your communication, the links will be spread to the public through Facebook, Google+ and other such social media. So set up pages on all of the major social networks as soon as you can.
Facebook is the big one at the moment. With their huge user-base and their event calendar you can run your business from there without worrying about your own domain. Google+ is new, but just as important to get in on. Google is the default search engine for most people and having a presence on Google+ helps your ranking in searches.
Another big reason to have a social network presence is that it does a lot of name recognition work for you. When people “check-in” at your location with their mobile phones, that message gets spread across their network of friends. It’s free advertising. Your name spreads through the magic of “viral advertising,” which may sound unpleasant but is the most effective form of advertising.
Now that you know how to name your business and create your own name recognition, perhaps The Crow’s Nest in Maplewood could use their own imagination and not steal my 2+ years of name recognition for The Crow’s Nest.

We HoIRs have a busy weekend coming up.

This Friday (tomorrow) is our housewarming party for the Crow’s Nest new location,Corsets and Boots!

Saturday we have two important events going on that will interest us HoIRs. There is the Big Strip: A Very Nerdy Christmas.

And at our home bar, The Crack Fox, it is the biannual, Sreampunk Social: Winter Masque Edition!
